How long is long enough?

Gadzooks Jan 16, 2005 09:50 PM

Last year I had small colony breeding type system. Since I have acquired more I have seperated them into seperate enclosures(combination of rack systems and 20 gal. displays) and was curious as to how long I should introduce the females to the male. I have two males that I use for breeding and Iam putting single females in one at a time with the males. I was thinking maybe a week and then seperate back out. Any opionins would be appreciated. Thanks Gadzooks

I have the same type of steup with a rack system and some tanks. I also have two males that I rotate around in the females cages. I usually just give them a couple of nights, they take care of business pretty quickly. Sometimes, I'll see a frantic male pressed against the side of an enclosure. If this is the case, I will remove him back to his own enclosure for a night or two. Basically I think the males love it, but you need to let them rest and rejuvenate once in a while. Good Luck.

I asked this very same question to a breeder friend not too long ago. If it is the female's first breeding, he suggested 3wks (This increases the fertility rate in her eggs). If she's bred before, I'd still prob go 1wk-3wk just to be sure.
