tegu introductions?

antares Jan 16, 2005 10:41 PM

I'm getting a new enclosure in about 2 weeks and it will be big enough to hold two tegus. I only have one right now but I was worried about his reaction if I put him with another tegu. He was raised by himself and is still a bit agressive (I'm trying to work on that). He's getting close to 3 feet long so I'm sure he could do damage if he wanted.

Should I let him get used to the new tank for a few weeks first? What would be better as a partner, male or female? What size should the other tegu be?

Any tips at all on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of tegu do you have now? Also they should be close in size. And a female with a male . My male is alot bigger than my female , so I had to watch them for a while .She became the dominate animale for a while. Now my male seems to hog the bigger basking sight these days . Take care Russ

He's an Argentine B&W, almost one and a half years old. I was concerned about getting a female because I wouldn't want to risk them breeding. If I did get one, should I let mine adjust to the new tank first or put them both in at the same time?

I would clean the tank with bleach(10 parts water-1part bleach). And Also put them in at the same time. make shure you rinse the tank well before you put them in together. Now as far as breeding mine have not. My male is also a Argentin and my female is a blue. Even though there basiclly the same speices,It dosent mean they will breed. My havent and I keep them at the same temps year round . I dont hibernate them ., but they may do it some day . hope this helps.take care russ
