Crested Breeding Question

YFZ450Racer Jan 17, 2005 10:29 AM

ok, i have one crested whom i believe is male 100%. however, i have one that is a little more than 6 months old. im about 90% sure its a female. now, should i bother putting the two together and see if i find any eggs? i reason i ask is becase the male is a great deal larger than the suspected female. should i wait a few more weeks or just put them together and see if i find any eggs?

i would wait a lot more than a few weeks. i would wait atleast 3-4 months depending on the geckos weight. the female should be ATLEAST 25 grams before you should even think about putting them together.
if it is a pair the female could lay eggs at pretty much anything over 18 G i would imagine. but it isn't healthy and will probably end up with infertile eggs or unhealthy/weak babies when they do hatch. also it is likely that you will have 1 egg laid rather than 2. it's just a better idea for the health and safety of your female gecko to wait. not only for her when she is going to be laying the eggs, but during breeding the males get quite aggressive and it is good for the females to bite and attack back when the male is TOO aggressive for self defense.

Your female needs to be at least a year old to breed and quite a bit larger, so you have a lot longer than a few weeks to go before you should try to pair them up.

You said she's not as big as the male, which is a prime indicator that she's not big enough. Mature adult females are usually always bigger (built a little heavier) than males.

The general weight guideline is no less than 35 grams for a female and at my place, I only place males with females that are at least a year old.

A six month old female Crested will most likely not be able to produce eggs, but it's not just a matter of if you find eggs or not. If you get impatient and try putting them together early, she could become eggbound or calcium deficient (resulting in MBD), both of which could cause death.

Just wait until July or so and then put them together. It'll be well worth the wait.

Ya I agree with Anthony, that the females should be at least 35 grams to breed. I have never breed anything under 35 grams. But I have never seen a male bigger then a female. My biggest male weighs 39 grams at 2 years, and my biggest female is at 47 grams at 1.5 years old. So you would be better to take Anthony's advice and wait till July, because what you suspect is a female might end up being a male, and they should be about 1 year old to breed. Good Luck! Erik
