harlanm Jan 17, 2005 11:31 AM

i found this stuff, its used as a replacement for wood in decking, picnic tables etc.. usually it comes in plank form but i found a place that sells sheets. kindof expensive though.
anyone know if this would work better than pvcx for long lasting good quality cages?

if thats the link you mean HDPE?
yes its a more durable material then the PVC. Depending on the thickness you are thinking about 1/4" or 1/2" etc would also depend on means of building. 1/2" you can cut and mill / predirll countersink screws and silicone the joints very sturdy.

1/4" you can do the same as 1/2" but IMHO not as strong for long term use this way

preferred method to join the hdpe / hdpp materials is thermal welding it much like welding metal but plastic lol lil trick yo make nice beads and have to somewhat prepare the materials the same ( chamferred corners etc) also the quaility welders are pricey over all if you plan it right , proper materials and methods used will work fine lol . but also consider the over all costs vs buying may be cheaper ,esp if you end up making a mistake in the process.

i am familar with this material. we sell toilet partitions that use this and it is great.... for partitions. i spent some time thinking about trying to use it and the more i thought about it, the less i liked it. we use 3/4" and 1" thick pieces and it warps very easily. without some type of support a span of 3'0" and over will sag alot very quickly. the other major downfall is that its *heavy*. it easily twice the weight of melamine.
