How much flexwatt to heat a 20 gallon long aquarium?

scarletmoon Jan 17, 2005 12:26 PM

I was wondering if anybody here has a 20 gallon long that they heat with flexwatt?

I want to run the flexwatt down the width of the cage on one side to make a warm side for my terrarium and before I cut things up, I would like to find out if one piece of tape would be enough or will I need two pieces side by side? The flexwatt is 3 inches wide and my house temp stays around 65-68 degrees at it's coolest if that matters.

The flexwatt is going to be taped to melamine and the aquarium will sit on top of it. This will be for Leopard Geckos.

Thanks

For a 20 gal, would'nt it be easier to use a commercially made UTH?
Weird, but Bean Farm was selling Ultratherm uth in all different sizes. One should have fit your needs...inexpensively.
But I was searching their site to give you a link, and they only offer two sizes.
Try Cobra Mat...or a brand along that line.

I just got done installing flexwatt to my 13 tanks for snakes. For the 10s I used 1 foot, and for the 20 longs, I used about 20 inches. My basement is also about 68 degs. I run all my tanks through a thermostat so I can control the temps. I soldered all of my connections, tape them up with electrical tape, and stuck them to the back of the bottom with aluminum foil tape like they use on heating and air ducts. I used small rubber spacers so the tank wasn't sitting on the wires. Also it gives the heat a little airflow for overheating. I used crimp connectors to daisy chain all tanks together. This way, if I need to take a tank out of line, they can still be connected. If you only plan on having 1 tank, Zoo med and Exo terra make heat pads for reptiles that are pretty nice. Either way, make sure you use thermometer and thermostat because I had a heating pad that was very hot. I was almost too hot to touch. Hope this helped. Once I discovered flex watt heat tape, I'll never use anything else. Also, one other thing, the heat tape is reusible, so you can take it off and move it.

Exo-terra is a good brand.. I would not use anything zoo med unless is a UV tube.. For a 20g I would use one 11x12" peice of 11" Flexwatt.. I have one 20 going now with this setup and it is perfect.....
