how often should i feed my boxie?

shelly78 Jul 04, 2003 10:12 PM

he eats crickets, meal worms* (his favorite)and canatloupe.

how often should i feed him? he is young maybe only a year or two. he has a huge appetite.

i made a mistake last time i bought crickets i dumped the whole bag of 20 into the tank and he ate them in 4 days, is that normal? he also had some meal worms with thoose crickets.

* looks confused * i thought it wasnt safe to put crickets in with reptiles because they would chew at the reptile .. i dont know if this applies to boxies or not though

crickets do chew on box turtles, they usually start to chew the shell within an hour of them being in with the turtle, just imagine what 20 would do in 4 days!

* cringing & thinks of how much a cricket can eat a day *

i was always very careful with the crickets i gave to my anoles.. i only gave them one at a time ... *lol* of course with my res i dont have to be quite so careful because i pop off the back leggs and put them in an area where there is only water .. then with in a few monutes if they arent eaten they drown

i also tried meal worms for my anoles ( which i have yet to find any around here ) i would crush their heads so that they couldnt have the opertunity to eat through the anoles .. which i have been told they have a tendancy to do ..

someone on the old forum had a meal worm eat through their baby box turtle.. thats why I dont feed mealies
I stick with worms/crawlers and whatever they find outside..

crickets, meal worms and canatloupe is not a good diet, turtles need variety, but to answer your question, you should feed your box turtle once every other day,

Can ants bother turtles? Obviously they are outside and possibly in her pen...

yes ants can cause promblems too, ants will chew on a turtle like they chew on worms
