I've been doing Dec 1 to Feb 14th and it seems to work. I think a lot of people cycle for longer than is necisary.

do you find that you get alot more pairing ups on valentines day is that why you make it the last day of cycling hahahahaha maybe with some romantic music and a fine rodent dinner for 2
randy is the man
Actually I've changed my schedule up quite a bit from year to year so it's not exactly set in stone. Last year I was WAY late trying to get a few straggler females up to size and didn't start cooling anything until spring. I still got clutches (late) but I think it hurt me being so late and I didn't do as well.
Also, now that I think about it, on my "regular" schedule I just stopped night cooling about Valentines Day, I went ahead and kept them together through March just in case those extra few breedings helped. I just don't think they need to be cooled from October to March.
This year, I cooled from Oct.1-Mar.1 Last year I was exactly a month later than that (Nov.1-Apr.1) I agree that most people cool longer than necessary (myself included) as I see the bulk of my copulations between mid-Jan. - end of Feb.
