Taking croc temperature?

venomousviper04 Jan 17, 2005 02:33 PM

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to safely take the temperature of a crocodilian? Bill Moss recommended checking the temp of my alligator but I don't know exactly what the best way to do that without losing fingers.
Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

should try to get a Temp Gun... from ProExotics or RadioShack...
not sure about RadioShacks temp gun quality...

Actually, the only way to get an accurate measure of body temperature is to place a thermometer or temperature probe about an inch into the vent. External temperature, as measured by an infrared gun, won't tell you much about internal temperature... and it's internal body temperature that's most important.

Unfortunately there's no way around it - you have to restrain the alligator to insert the thermometer or probe for several seconds and take a reading. Obviously this should be done with some help!
