Actually I'm a ratsnake keeper. This is a snake a friend of mine found. But since he's from my locale I figured he should go up on this forum. Not a lot of snake variety up here in New England. So I keep asian rats for fun.
John
I caught mine in western MA, the one in your pic is nicer, actually.

I didn't realize the local milks were as pretty as they are until I saw this guy. I've been hoping to see some smooth green snakes around. But haven't seen any yet. Are there any near you?
John
we used to have a population of smooth greens, when I was about 7 I caught a few. then later in the year my uncle bulldozed the are and dug the little stream out and removed all the old concrete. I think thats where they used to lay eggs. if anyone knows a good spot to see them I would be happy this has been my target species for about 4 years now with no luck. I just want to capture it on film.

I'm willing to travel too

Thanks I would be very greatful
I have seen only two in my life. One was at a timber rattlesnake den area, and I cant say where that is, and the other one, (but it is notable that it was in the middle of the woods, NOT in tall grass like the literature says) the other one, which I saw in the summer of 03, was on Mercer Mountian, on the NYS border, near canaan NY. it was at the summit, in tall grass and blueberry bushes, and it dashed away before I could grab it. I was furious with myself for not being fast enough to get it, but I was so surprised and happy to see it! they are QUICK little buggars!

hey you wouldn't happeen to have pics of the timbers would you? if so could you post them, they are another target species, then Iv'e got pics of all NY's venomous snakes.
Wayne
yeah I have some nice pics, but none are digital at the moment(I HATE digital cameras) and I didnt have my negatives put on a CD. but I'll probably have that done, and post some timber pics within the next few herpless months.

most are, yes. I know a couple good den spots in mass too, one of them is where that one green snake was.

Nice specimen. It has a light orange color, unlike any i've collected. The specimens i've collected here in Southern connecticut are brick red, black and white.
I find red, black and cream colored ones in the catskills. I like both types. I think the farther south you go, the redder they get.

but I'm far from an expert on the local milks in Central Mass. I'll probably put up more pictures of other milks when I find them. In the meantime I'll look for some pics of another local milk that the same guy found.

Yet another E. Milk from Central MA Spring 2004

Thanks for sharing the pic. Can't wait for the temperature to stay above freezing for a few weeks and get me thinking about spring again.

John
Heck, winter brings snow tracking wildlife & ice fishing. It's all good!
you're probably a native New Englander. But I'm glad you guys can enjoy it.
Best regards
John
