I was doing my weekly snake feedings when I came across my male ringed python eating his own shed skin. I thought maybe it got caught in his mouth somehow but after a few seconds of watching, I realized he was actually trying to eat it. It was a large chunk of shed. I then used my hemastats to remove/pull out the shed skin from his mouth so I could feed him and move on. There was no way that the skin smelled like a mouse...its HIGHLY unlikely. I took a few pics but they didn't come out too well b/c I moved fast as to avoid getting bitten.
Has anyone else ever observed this odd behavior?
IF SO, why do they do it?
