Do arm-waving males sucessfully breed?....

photojoe Jan 17, 2005 08:00 PM

This might be a wierd question - and it is just out of pure curiousity, but would males that show submissive behavior, like arm waving, ever breed? I'm not sure what he is doing it to. Maybe his reflection, maybe me, but I was curious - would this mean that he would be "man" enough, to dominate a female enough to sucessfully breed. In this day of PC, that sounded so bad.

Thanks for quenching my curiousity

Just kidding around of course. All dragons will arm wave, bob heads, obtain different postures to show status and develop a social order with each other.

It is very possible that some males will not make good breeders and be very submissive especially around agressive females. We have had this happen to a few of our males. A couple of them have taken a much longer time to breed then I would have guessed... but there are things you can do to help that out.

However, I have never noticed arm waving a "definite" sign for that in our collection that we have raised up from hatchlings. I think your male will be just fine and as he grows older the arm waving should subside quite a bit.... if it doesn't, i would double check it's not actually a female.

LOL... yea, that's what i meant when i was joking.. that yes it's normal... meaning you would say hello to a girl before "breeding" but i didn't make it come out right i guess.

Congrats on the 4 kids and the wife lol.... now with Jessica all I had to do was let her take pictures of me (inside joke for cheri LOL).

Have a good one man!

Jessica took this one the other night of a baby sugar glider we produced.... when we saw it on the computer we both looked at each other and we're like we have to show this one to Cheri.

The sugar glider found a new home in my jeans.

LOL

good to hear from you too!

I have a very submissive male, he wasn't always this way, he bred my female 2X then got really submissive. He's bigger than any other male he could possible visualize and no females I have ever have been dominant to him. But suddenly he has decreased (non-existent) interest in copulation and a marked increase in submissive behaviors.

So anyone who knows who to make him "manly" again, let me know cos I want him to do his thing and get my females pregnant.

I would try brumating him and bringing him back up to cycle him and expose him to males to fire him up once he's back up to par from brumation.

Hi there. Have you tried seperating him from the females for a long period of time. We house our males seperate for a number of reasons, to control amount of breeding, reduce stress on the females, and to keep the males interested. Whenever rocky see's the girls he go's mad, and is straight in there.
Just a thought,
CHEERS,

Jonathon - All dragons (Males and Females alike), even when they are adults they can head bob and arm wave. It is a submissive behavior exhibited when, well, they are being submissive, just as adult females can head bob when they are acting dominant.
