Dwarfism in CB dart frogs

ecologic72 Jan 18, 2005 12:22 AM

I was wondering how common dwarfism is among captive bred dart frogs. I have a Dendrobates azureus male that is quite a bit smaller than my other male and half the size of my large female (both of whom are beginning to exhibit breeding behaviour), they are all about a year old. All of my frogs were bought from well-known frog breeders.

Would it be best to keep the runt in it's own seperate tank? ....anyone else had experience with dwarf or "runt" frogs.

Could be that the two bigger ones don't let the littlier one eat as much, so his growth wasn't as fast as his. How long have they been together?

I had raised all three D. azureus seperatley until they were about 8 months old in small 2.5 gal planted terrariums. I'm, sure they were all getting adequate food, I fed them heavily on termites, ff's and ants. As the three developed, one frog grew to be very large and very fat actually- almost cow-like...that one seems to be a female, the normal sized male is somewhat smaller, while the runt is 1/3 of his size.

I think this guy was just underdeveloped as a tadpole or larvae, the female seems to have chosen the larger male...naturally I've been witnessing early forms of courtship behaviour. (the frogs are about a year old)

Should I take him out or leave him in this vivarium? He seems to be content...wouldn't want to stress him out.
