I believe they are great. I use mine everyday just to monitor my tanks. I can check the low end, basking area and sweep the tank and get a gradient reading.

I have one, and it's a great tool. Make sure it isn't your only tool, though - also get a digital thermometer with one or two probes (from the garden center of any big chain store). The two are ideally used together.

Temp guns tell you the surface temp of an object, while the digital one tells you the air temp. You need the air temps to be the correct basking temps. Sometimes the surface temps of the item under the basking spot can go way above that - the temp gun will help you check that. The temp gun is also good for ambient temps, as the surface of the glass walls will be similar to the air temps.

A friend of mine lost two young uros to pneumonia. She realized later that she was only checking basking temps with a temp gun. The surface temp of the basking rock was 120, but she found out later with a digital probe thermometer (too late) that the air temp there was only just over 100*. They are (in my eye) indispensible tools to be used together.

I would get the one with the laser instead. I have that one and it works pretty good!

I found my Hardwickiis chase the laser around, so it's functional as a toy as well
