HELP!!!

brandondavis Jan 18, 2005 11:48 AM

I have a 3 year old BRB. She has been bounced around alittle in the past 3 mounths but I have tryed to make a good home for her. Her last owner is very frightend by snakes and was going to try and work through her fears with this snake...well that did work out and only mamaged to scare the snake and make it very jumpy. ANYWAYS, I have had her for about 2 mounths now and we have been doing well together up untill saterday. Suddenly she has become extreamly agresive. No one cant walk buy the cage with out her striking at them, let alone get her out of her cage. I doubt it cause shes hungrey cause I feed her 2 mice ever week, probubly too much as it is. I dont know what to do, or why this might be happening. Anyone got any ideas??

Brandon,
...BRBs are nocturnal and secretive. They need a good place to hide. If they have too much activity around their cages and are not able to hide they will become stressed. If you do have a hiding place in the cage perhaps it is too hot or cold and the snake stays out of it because of the temperature in the hiding spot.

Strang you should mention that...Well I ahve her out in my living room and there is abit of activity out there. I do have a hide and she has been using itup untill saterday as well, now shes burowing. If I even touch her cage seh comes charging out ready to bite anything moving. So should I move her habitat into my bedroom were it less active? her cage only get up to 80 and her hide is on the cool end of the cage, she will not use it if its in the hot end or in the middle of the habitat.

...move her to a quieter location and add another hide on the opposite end. Did you say you are feeding 2 mice a week and it may be too much? At 3 years old on that feeding schedule you may be underfeeding. It should easily be able to take a small or med rat every 7 to 10 days.

Yeah, we were going to start feeding her rats as soon as I was done with the few mice I have left. So do you think maybe shes just hungery? That what I was thinking but my friend Noel ( yes the one on this MB, hey there!) Was saying that we were more then likly over feeding them, and that there was no way she would be hungery. I normaly take her out of the cage and put her into a feed box but Im having such problems with just geting her out that I was thinking just this once feeding her in her habitat. And I dont realy have room in her habitat for another hide, I ahve logs and fake plants for her to climb on and a large water bowl cause she LOVES to soak. Waht takes up the most room is a huge log in her cage, and I would remove it but she loves basking on it so much I cant see taking it out.

Brandon,
.....LOVES to soak? Big old log? Sudden change in behaviour? Look for mites. Mites would make her move out of her hiding spot, spend more time in the water and be aggitated. Just a thought.

*smacks her forehead* ...No, I didn't say we were probably "over" feeding, I said we were feeding them "enough." The two adult mice once a week won't leave them so hungry that they show signs of agression like that. I look forward to feeding them the rats once we get them so they are getting more substance, but in the meantime they aren't starving. Both Eve and Lilith look very healthy. Feel free to add a third adult mouse if it will make you feel better!

I think ultimately the suggestion that you move Lilith to your bedroom is a good one. Also, please don't revert to feeding her in her cage. If you want I will come over and help you get her out to feed her, but with her past "attitude" issues, I would continue to feed her in the feed box. But that's just me. Let me know if you want me to coe over. I am more than happy to help.

I'm no expert, but the kind of behavior you descibed seems like hunger to me. I have yearlings that eat 2 weanling rats a week...and a 2 year old that eats medium rats every 7-10 days. An adult mouse only weighs about 40 grams....a medium rat can weight 150 grams...just for comparison.....
