FBT still hugging, not eating

vitor332 Jul 05, 2003 01:00 AM

i posted a message awhile ago about my fbt not eating. well, it's been almost a week now, and they haven't eaten anything yet. they just cuddle. i separated the female and put her in a smaller tank, but she completely ignored the cricket in there. i put them back in the same tank and she immediately swam towards the male toad and they cuddled together. i put a cricket in their tank and they seem to ignore it. it's really puzzling.

does changing their tank from a small, small tank to a 10 gallon tank have an affect on their eating habits? they look healthy to me, but i don't know why they're not eating. thanks in advance.

Do they have a proper site to lay the eggs? 5 inches of water at least? Mine always ignored the food while in amplexus. But they only stayed this way for a few days-it felt like forever because I'd worry about them eating too. Well, at least we know there are Toads and Frogs out there that can survive without food for weeks and slow metabilism to accomodate. Sounds to me, yours are rearing to have the babies first before they will eat. Changing the tank will sometimes cause froggies to not eat in order to adjust and the change has been said by some to encouage breeding. I've heard of other people's frogs not eating for a whole week to adjust. If they were ill, they would not be breeding. They will only breed if they are well, and comfy-nature will always dictate that they survive first above all else. Just make sure there is food available if they need it. Let us know how it goes!

Boy, they sure are love birds! Good thing they don't have the metabolic systems of lovebirds or they'd be dead! When frogs/toads begin to starve(generally speaking), they respond(to the best of my understanding)with a slowing down of the metabalism. There is one frog/toad that hybernates all year and eats only once! Alligators/Crocks will guard their eggs for months without eating. (not saying your FBTs are like this-mind you!). But, If they were suffering, they first would discontinue to breed, and then you'd see them stop being as active, preparing to slow metabilism. Sounds to me your guys are still at it, hopping around in amplexus, looking for proper laying site. The female doesn't attempt to kick off the little male, right? Then, most likely starvation is not going on. Make sure you have food in the tank so that if they feel they must have some food, they will have some. And when they do lay the eggs, they will need to eat. By the way, some breeders of certain frogs trick into breeding by cooling the frogs a bit and removing any food for 4-5 days then raising temps to encourge frogs to get into amplexus. You don't need to do this since your frogs are already in amplexus, but this tells you that not eating prior to breeding(a pusedo winter)has been forcibily done. What sort of water site do you have for them by the way?
