Any other insects? (other than crickets, roaches, and silkworms)

bmulcahy Jan 18, 2005 04:12 PM

I am trying to find the perfect insect to feed my beardies in my class. The crickets are too noisy(they disrupt the class) and my beardeds don't consistently eat them. They love the lobster roaches but they scare they heck out of me with that wall climbing stuff. I have a tank in my class that I vaseline and wrap up like Fort Knox. But when I feed, those suckers sure do run. I can't take the emotional stress (LOL) of having one escape. My school isn't too keen on my animals (4 beardeds, 6 corns, 1 tortoise, 2 geckos, and a chamelion) and I can't have a colony of roaches starting up in the school(especially in the walls). And lastly, I just bought some silkworms and I am not impressed(too small, mess with the silk, and poop sticking to them). Is there anything else out there that I can try?

I am willing to try anything.

Thanks!
Brian

Try superworms. Mine just love them. they can live in either oatmeal, or wheatgerm. There is minimal handling, they are quiet, and you don't have to look at them. Hope it goes well for you.

I do use superworms. Do you feed superworms exclusively with veggies? I was looking for something to alternate with the worms. I give waxworms for treats every now and then also. Do your superworms smell? I buy them by the 1000 and the tub smells a lot.

Thanks for any thoughts!

super worms have a bad chitin to meat ratio worse than crics...i dont really like them for that reason, same with meal worms...other than going to pellets those are the only options i know of..sorry

i am growing my own mealworms, i have 200 beatles and about 2000 worms at this time and they dont smell a bit...im keeping them on a mix of bran, wheat germ and cricket gut load with fruit and veggies added almost every day...its east and no smell (well no more then the rest my herp room, its very clean, my husband is aneat freak) maybe try diffrent things to keep them on to make them smell better.
good luck!

I have really stated to like roaches. I got the discord and they dont climb and are not that fast. They are acutally kind of shy so they are usually hidding when I do picks for feeding my dragon. I dont know if you colonized your lobster roaches but discords are breeding good for me. Hope this helps. Wish my science teacher had that may pets in class.
