staining trim

harlanm Jan 18, 2005 05:22 PM

i got some of the cheap trim/ molding from home depot, it is called clearwood i think
well i tried to stain it and it didnt seem to take, it has fake grain lines on the surface. when i sanded it the "grain" disapeared. if i sand it all down will it take stain and look ok? should i just get real wood trim?
also i got some stainable wood filler and sure its stainable but it in no way blends into the wood, should i just use plugs?

Clearwood® is a patented natural grain and coating process that can be finished in the home using traditional stains or paints applied to mouldings, interior portion of windows, doors, walls, ceilings, and floors.
The product is proven to offer a natural finished look of wood without the time, mess, and continuous maintenance of wood.
Clearwood® offers the ability to custom or faux finish to match your existing or new decor.

if anyone has worked with it before and can give me tips on why it wont seem to stain please let me know

i am a residential painter and have worked with this stuff.
there is a special kit you must buy to be able to stain the plastic wood. it will look just as good as real stained wood but last much longer. the kit works the same as regular staining and comes with just about everything you need (youll need rags and an oil brush)including clear coat. i dont think you are supposed to sand off the grain so im not sure what to do now that you have. as far as the stainable wood putty goes it works fine, just stain the wood like you normaly would and you will not see them. make sure you whipe it off the surrounding wood so you get a plug like appearence rather than a smudge.
hope this helps.
