Need a tank maker suggestion please!

shopaholic Jul 05, 2003 02:21 AM

Wow, Acrylic makers like to charge an arm and a leg. I just wanted a Cylinder tank 16"x 30" and its in the thousand range! Another thousand or so for the stand and top. Can anyone recommend someone to buy either a cylinder glass or acrylic tank of close to those specs? Or if the cyilander is to much to ask, how bout a square or hex but same idea: smaller footprint with some height for arboreal dart frogs? Or does anyone know if Pyrex Beakers are available close to this size, and how one would get one? Thanks!

You might check some plastics suppliers like US Plastics to see if they sell acrylic cylinders, then try to fabricate your own (for that price, you should be able to screw things up a few times and still come out ahead on money). Pyrex beakers do exist in a 12" x 24" size, and Brent Brock has turned one into a thumbnail tank (see http://www.konza.ksu.edu/~blbrock/). However, those won't be cheap either . . . even if you can locate one (which I haven't been able to do).

You may be best advised to make a vertical tank out of a 20 gallon long stood on end. That should have approximately the dimensions you are looking for with less cost and fabrication hassle. I think there are some pics of similar setups on the photo albums at frognet.org to give you ideas on this.

Good luck,

You could look for a Hex tank, if you make your own stand and lid it should be well under $200. I think you can get a 35gal Hex for about $100 or so. I had a chance to get a used one for $55 and I passed it up and I am really kicking myself for it.

The hexagonal tanks come in 30 gallon with hinged glass top. They are about the dimensions you are looking for. I have set up two of them--one for imitators and one for the anticipated pumilios. They are a stock item in Petco and I've seen them in other pet stores. Don't you have your little guys in a 10 gallon heaxagonal tank now?

I've seen the large cylindrical beakers and chemical tanks in some laboratory equipment catalogs, but as Homer said, they are pricey. I'll check around with the biological supply places and let you know if I find anything.

The tank was just being set up in the photo and the hinged top isn't shown.

I truly can't remember what I paid for my 30 gallon hexagonals, but they seemed very reasonable to me. Mine came with hinged hood and light and were "on sale."

After extensive searching I failed to find cylinders except hand blown art glass I didn't even bother to price. But here's a link to some more hexagonals in many different sizes.

Hello,

I have recently been thinking about starting to build custom tank for dart froggers out of acrylic. Currently I would only feel comfortable constructing a square one for you, but I would say that for a 16in. x 16 in. x 30 in. the price would run about $100-$150 and that would include a front opening face and screen ventilation system. I could also set up for you a misting/rain system which would be very inexpensive and a false bottom if you would like that as well. let me know if this interests you.

Take care,
