Boiga dendrophila gemmicincta care tip help, Just got them....

stevemcc Jan 18, 2005 07:58 PM

I just got a pair (1.1) of Boiga dendrophila gemmicincta. Anybody have any experience with them? What Temp and Humidity do you keep them at? They are both eating prekilled mice off tongs. So far no problems, I haven't Flagyled or Panacured them yet. Anybody have breeding experience? Thanks in advance. I'll have pics soon....

I keep my dendrophila at with a temp range from the mid to low 70's on the cool side with a warm side in the 80's...she's been spending a lot of time on the cooler side as winter set in, but during the rest of the year alternates between both sides. Humidity is between 50-70% at any given time, and she gets a bath before sheds to ensure complete sheds.

Interesting that your IMPORTS are taking pre-killed off tongs...my CAPTIVE BRED AND BORN female won't take anything unless it's alive and kicking! How unfair is that!

They are great snakes and awesome captives, I'm sure you'll enjoy.

thanks for the info!! From what everbody is telling me I did luck out, feeding prekilled. I do have to feed them at night and wiggle the mouse alittle for them to even show any interest in it..

Boiga d. gemmicincta seem to be easy to keep. Mine is wildcaught too and is eating everything I throw into her enclosure- dead or alive. Keep her under the same conditions as B. d. melanota. I mist the enclosure every other day. Just make sure that they have a lokal spot and a mild undertank heat tape on one side. Misting this area intensively ensures a realtively high humidity. Mine prefers resting on the bottom of her enclosure and sometimes hides herself underneath a hiding place just big enough for her.
My personal experience is, that they can be handeld carefully with gloves at daytime, but at night are somewhat aggressive as is to be expected with night active snakes.
They are a joy to keep and one of the most impressing snakes to be kept. Best wishes for you and your snakes.

Thanks for the info!! How big is your cage and your snake?

IndigoBlue1 Feb 02, 2005 02:51 AM

The snake is about 1.80m long and her enclosure is 145cm square, 145cm high and 70cm deep. Could be bigger...

These are very interesting and rewarding snakes to keep. I only have one, a LTC adult female, but she keeps me on my toes lol.

Mine spends 95% of her time perched on her PVC pipe jungle gym I have constructed for her. I keep her temps at around 85 on the warm side and 75-78 on the cool side. They like their humidity to be rather high, so misting every day is recommended.

I do NOT advocate the handling of this species. Although they are not life-threatening (unless you have an adverse/allergic reaction to the venom) the effects can vary from person to person. I use a hook when I must remove mine from her cage. SOmeone else mentioned they are 2 different snakes in the day & night....this couldn't be truer lol. Mine will show uncanny aggression if disturbed at night, but on the plus side she is a garbage disposal eater and eats very well.

Lastly, here are a couple pictures of my snake:

Hey Thanks for the info. I use a hook also to handle them. So far mine are mellow during the day and "jumpy" at night. The male seems to be bit more ill tempered then the female. So far out of the 2, he's the only one to strike at the glass. What size enclosure do you have them in?

I keep my female in a large rubbermaid, I belive it is a 92 quart.
