realistic rock looking nest box....where can I get one

skmcwilliams Jan 18, 2005 08:57 PM

I have now the light plastic rock looking hides in my show style tanks but always have to settle for old butter bowls to make nesting sites. It really looks an eye sore. I have been keeping my eye out for those same type of plastic rock looking hides that are nesting boxes but have yet to find anything. My husband says he can make me what I want with a vacumn form machine but if one can be bought please point me in the right direction.

you can make one yourself very easily.

1. get a butter tub or something similar about the same shape and size you want.
2. go to home depot or lowes and by a can of great stuff foam in a can and stone creations fleck stone spraypaint.
3. cover the tub with the foam and let dry for 24 hours.
4. either pull/cut out the butter tub or leave it in after it is all dry.
5. just paint it with the stone paint now and you will be surprised how well it comes out.

a can of foam is about 4$ and the paint is about 7$ you should have enough left over to make a few hide boxes

here is what it looks like, this one was made by captainhook2 who frequents the cage and habitat forum

That looks really great. So there is no problem with any of those chemicals being toxic that is covering the tub?

i would wait about a week to make sure the paint has time to offgas, if you dont smell anything and the paint has been dry for a while, it should be fine. the good thing about this is you can make it as big or small as you want, you could even do the whole tank that way, i do
