arboreal vs terranium

People recommend the taller tanks, but all the hexagon tall tanks in my area don't have screen covers, just solid tops with large holes. I don't know if this provides adequate ventilation, especially with a light hood over it frogs could burn themselves. Should I just put my white's in a 10 gallon tank w/ a screen top then?

You have to manufacture your own screen top on a hex tank. You need to be handy with measurements, familiar with screen window frame technology at your local hardware store and know your tools and building materials (or make arrangements with a hanyman). One idea I saw was to lay loose vinyl screening over the top and use the savior-of-mankind duct tape around the outside top edge to seal. Not real pretty, but it can get you by until you get/make something better. Another easy way out is to get a metal screen cover for your ten gallon, put some stick-on pedestal "feet" on one of the small glass sides (back to the hardware store) and set it on that side. Use the metal clamps as you normally would, but hook them on the long sides. Get a lid with a door in it so you reduce escape attempts and spilled substrate at feeding/cleaning time. I don't have that much trouble with ventilation with my tree frogs. I think the main idea is to keep the glass from fogging up so you can see them and reduce the buildup of algae to assist in cleaning chores both of which are not particularly life threatening to frogs. Taller tanks are better so that the frog has more area to wander in naturally. This is an attempt to reduce the stress of captivity (like living in the wild isn't stressful?). Use flourescent lighting to reduce the risk of burns...make sure it's isolated away from the screen by a few inches like in a typical reflector hood. Frogs don't particularly need lighting...it's mainly for the live plants if you use them. Live plants are good oxygen suppliers/air filters/stress reducers.

waaaaayyyyy easier solution, get some pieces of screen from your local hardwear store (max cost $10) and cut them in little circles to cover the holes. Add some non toxic silicone or good old hot glue and your set! you mgiht need to ad some more holes your self; just watch your humidity (because you DO have a hygrometer) and if it starts to get too high, or you feel the ventelation just isnt enough get something sharp and make more holes!
