Sore on tail

makikato Jan 18, 2005 10:28 PM

Hi,

My gecko just recently went through a shed... and apparently he took off too much. I noticed about a day after his shed that he had a bit of what seems to be an open sore on his tail. It's almost as though a thick layer of skin was torn off - one of the bottom halves of the "scales" on the tail. I noticed when I saw him licking at it, and it seems to sometimes leave a bit of pus behind after touching something - like a rock.

Wondering if I need to do anything special for him to heal this... for one I've noticed it seems a bit of sand may be sticking in the area. (Yes - he's on a sand substrate, but is well into adult hood and has never had complications with the sand before). Maybe for a start I should lay paper towels over the sand to avoid any sticking to this area?

Thanks for your advice.
Maki

Yes, I would definately get him off sand to avoid any further irritation. Put some neosporin on the wound and watch him carefully. If it seems to really bother him or looks as though it's getting infected call a vet and get his opinion on it or make an appoinment. A pic could help, how big is it?
