When i kept kingsnakes I found they(or I) liked aspen the best. They can burrow and all that good stuff. Carefresh works well, I eventually switched to carefresh because aspen makes it hard for me to breath(allergies).

Just my opinion.

what is carefresh? I am a new bp mom and have been debating about what substrate would be best for him. we were thinking about aspen, but I am allergic to most all woods. although he seems to really like the (unprinted) newspaper that we are using now (he likes to hide under the paper an generally "re-arange the furinture" every nite), we wanted something a little more attractive. any sugestions?

Carefresh is a bedding material made from 100% virgin wood pulp fiber (meaning it's never been processed). It's not the most attractive of substrates (it's grey), but it's great at its job.

I use that on top of newspaper for a couple of my kingsnakes (they are such messy, stinky poopers). My large ball python tank just has newspaper with a coconut fiber "mat" for a hiding area (and that I can keep damp during shed cycles).
