Turtle greens?

jbarry Jan 19, 2005 07:53 AM

I have had my RES for several years and they love Romaine Lettuce. What other "greens" can I feed them? Green beans? Peas? Spinach?

I have heard Dandelion greens are good. Is that true? What other plants/weeds that grow in the Midwest are good for turtles?

Please help me with ideas.

No spinach. Dandelion greens are great, so are mustard greens, collards, really anything other than spinach. They are all cheap too, usually less than a dollar for a huge bundle.

you don't want to use spinach because it has a calcium absobtion inhibiter in it. There are other dark green leaves with this proptery but i can't remember what they are

ppl used to be real afraid of spinach and other stuff with oxalic acid in it. but all you have to do is give the turts extra calcium, and theres no problem. dont use it a lot but just a little bit

use aquatical plants, all kinds
lettuces, all kinds (not a lot of nutritions, but okay sometimes)
greens--- dandelion collards mustard beets carrots chickweed
veggetables--- squash tomato okra
fruits all kinds---- apple banana pears orange kiwi mango grapes
flowers--- violets hibiskis hostas carnations pansys
bugs worms snails slugs meats
keep cuttlebone in the water all the time

Thank you for the idea. I never fed our turtles flowers, but they may like them. We have tried lightening bugs and crickets. They do eat up worm when we find them in the summertime. They seem to love variety so I will try some of these ideas. Cuttlebone does seem to be helpful and we do use that from time to time, but they eat it all up. Thanks for your help.
