Question about frozen feeder.

denial Jan 19, 2005 09:16 AM

Excuse me, could someone tell me how do i stock up feeder hamsters. I am currently feeding pre-killed adult syrian hamsters to my 4ft Ball python every fortnight or so, usually i get the feeder when the pet shop has stock of them. Due to my tight time constraints between school and work, i can't go down frequently so i am thinking of getting a small quantity and preserve them. Do i freeze the hamsters at ice point or i could keep them in the lower compartment, the place where we usually leave our drinks. Last question how do i thaw it and how long does it take usually ? Oh will the frozen hamster be wet after thawed?

Pre-kill the rodent if you aren't buying them dead, then Deep freeze the rodent so it is frozen solid.

Use a towel and dry it off. No problem.

It will only be wet if you allow water into the 'thaw bag'. I usally thaw my f/t in a pot of VERY hot water with the prey inside a good freezer bag, then I weigh down the 'mouse/rat end' down with a filled up 2liter bottle and make sure the opening is above water. Once it becomes 'warmish', I dump and refill with very hot water. After 45 min or so I have a perfectly thawed, dry prey item.

However, there are probably advantages to feeding 'wet' prey if the snake will take. (digestion would be aided in my opinion)
