Shedding problem.

BRG Jul 05, 2003 06:39 AM

Well not really, but at 15 months old I would think it would have slowed down considerably.I peel off all the old shed when I hold her and within a week or two I have to peel the same spots again! It's like having a full time job Just thought I would share a new pic of the shedding.Sorry for the bad quality pic

Looks like a shedding problem to me. Most likely a fungi, from to moist of dirt. But thats only a guess. Good luck. F

I was joking. No stuck sheds and her cage is actually dry(but she soaks daily). She is growing so much and eating a lot recently.I had a serious skin infection on an Iguana that turned out to be cancer and he didn't survive. You know 1000 times what I do, so I respect any opinion you have.

To me it looks like some minor skin problem. I would not get all crazy over it. Even the skin thats not peeling looks a bit bumpy or something. If I see that here, I just change out the dirt and off we go. No big deal. I would not automaticialy relate it to your iggie. Also, remember, this is the internet, and even pics can be misleading. F

I have the same questions practically. My little female BT has yet to shed. I'm thinking she is about six months old and is relativly small. She came to me as a rescue. I had thought that she would've shed by now but I've never she 1 scale come off her body. She is eating a lot now and has thickened up a lot too. But not one shed and I've had her now for three months. I guess maybe she was using all the nutrients from the mice to repair and it's halted her growing/shedding cycle.
Anyone have any ideas, thoughts? Questions, comments, snide remarks.

Hmm sounds similar to my problem. I've had my sav for pretty much a year now. He didnt start to shed till about 2-3 months later, but he barely shed. Now about 9 months after his first shedding w/ me hes grown from 3-4 inches w/tail to about 11.5 inches w/tail. Yeah he shed but barely! So about a week ago I started to do some changes. Here is what I now do: 1)I got him a new tank, 2)I added a humongous water bowl to his tank for soaking, 3)I started feeding him EVERY day, thawed small mice every other day and insects those days in between 4)I started using UVA lighting. Well its been about a week and guess what? He shed a huge chunk of his belly and I'm not sure if hes ready yet but I see signs of shedding w/ whitish skin areas going from his neck to the base of his tail and I see his tail is turning whitish and some scales are starting to peel. I am getting excited since every time he would shed, he would shed in very small amounts but now it looks like a biggy. Last week I also peeled a huge piece of shedding skin off his scalp. I'm waiting for that skin to come off within the week adn I'm hoping he will break through. My case is different from yours in that my monitor has shed while yours hasnt but he still hasnt shed much at all. I hear that most monitors get to 2-3 feet in a year! I however am noticing signs of change as not only is his skin starting to peel, but his base of his tail is getting much rounder and he is getting bulkier. I am hoping to see my monitor get to about 3 feet at the end of the year but we'll see. Just do those 4 things that I've done and you will probably get the same results as me. Good luck to the both of us. Cheers.

Right now she's in a 54"x24"x24" wooden cage. He basking is about 120o, cool is 89o, and ambient really varies from 89-96. When the air conditioning in the house is running at full blast it's about 90 in there. There isn't alot of dirt like what she'd really like, there's about four inches, maybe a hair more. She has logs in there like crazy that have holes all in them for hide spots and a huge water bowl.
She is 21" (measured her just now) and is probably about six months old. She is fed every other day a large mouse. She gets soaked twice a week and misted everyday. I haven't had her very long. Her growth may have been stunted by her previous owner. From what I know he bought her as a hatchling and then kept her in a 20 gallon with little to no heat, little to no water, and very little food until her surrendered her to me a couple of months ago. The only way she seems to have grown is out. She has thickened up a lot since I got her. At some point adn time while he had her he broke her jaw too. Jerk!!!
This is her now. 21 inches nastiness!!! I'm wearing gloves for a reason. Since she has gotten healthy she has started to act like a montior. She now bites and has a lot of strenght in that bite for such a small one.
Enjoy!

All puffed up and no one to bite!

Are you sure shes 21"? My monitor is a little bit bigger than yours and hes about 12". I wouldn't say shes stunted, if she didnt grow in a year I'd say she'd be stunted. Mine has grown like I said about 6-7 inches in about 11 months and thats quite small but he isnt stunted. He shedding now (some scals are peeling off!). I would say your monitor is about 12" not 21", still keep doing what you are doing and you might get her to grow. Good luck.

No she is 21 inches for sure! I have never owned a blackthroat before so I'm not sure if she is up with the rest of the class or not. That 21 inched is including tail too. She has all her tail and toes by the way.
When I just took her out from soaking a little while ago she had some shed on her rear left leg and I peeled it and was shocked at what I saw. I've never seen a BT with color like this before. She is like a hypo or something crazy like that under that dead old skin. I don't know. I tried to take pictures of the color but the spot is too small for any good definition to show through. She is jet black with high yellow with an almost purple spots and white. It's so weird!!! Now I'm hoping for a shed and soon. I want the full body to show this little girl off!

Hmm thats good. I had that problem too back in September and I got my monitor in July. He hadnt shed from July to August and then finally in September he shed a little bit around the corners of his legs like yours. Then he shed some more continuing on and he still is but b/c he started sheding about 2-3 months later that is why he only grew about 7 inches w/ me. Now he is shedding again and he just shed last week! I think he is going through more sheddings now since he is fed A LOT more and I've included a large soaking bowl for him. He is starting to peel on the tail and back. I cant wait.
