Lethargic Gecko

nomadofthehills Jan 19, 2005 03:16 PM

My friend in highschool has had a gecko for a few months, eating everyday, was friendly and active. However, now she says is that recently, he doesn't want his food, and just sits around doing nothing under his rock, even at night.

I'll try to get more information, but for now, any clues? Could this be impaction? He is on calci-sand...

It could be anything really. Anything from impaction or other serious problem to simply a winter cool down. Try to get the following information from your friend:

When was the last stool past?
Does he appear bloated?
What are him tank temperatures highs and lows?
What is the tank set-up? (size, humidity levels, etc etc)
How long has this lethargic behavior been going on?

If it has been awhile since the last poopie then it might well be an impaction. Try soaking him in warm water to see if it will pass. I wish I could tell you more, but without more information, its really hard. If the leo has passed feces recently, or is still passing feces, taking a sample to the vet to check for parasites is a really good idea.

Either way, i would move him off calci-sand and onto paper towels or some other safe substrate immediately.

Today at school, before I read this post... she showed me a pic of her gecko leaning against the tank, and there is a large dark mass that apears to be calci sand. I told her get it off calci sand, and onto paper towels, and to soak him in luke warm water for 15 minutes.

She is gonna let me know what happens.

I told her that if nothing happens after she soaks him, take him to the vet. Should I tell her to take him anyway?
