African Rock Feeding

BrentB Jan 19, 2005 07:11 PM

Well when i bought my African Rock i had some troubles with feeding, he was a little sick, i got him over it, got him feeding good. Then winter came along, and quit eating because it is getting a bit colder, im wondering if i put him in a warmer room, if there is a good possibility he will start eating again.
I would like to keep him eating because he is still pretty small, and when he had Giardia, that didnt help. Thanks

Well where ever you keep him whether a basement in Alaska or a sun deck in Florida you need to artifically regulate his temps to be species specific. Naturally in the colder months you need to adjust for that change. Myself, I need to downgrade my heat in the winter due to the heating in my apartment building. With A/C in the summer I need to up my heat source.

This is why I keep my snakes in a separate small room. There could be a number of reasons your snake isnt eating, but start out by making sure it isnt a housing issue. also, my african rock just recently got a little more shy so I need ot just leave the ft rodent in the cage and eventually he will take.

I have a burmese that eats like a pig from March until October. Every fall, when the temperature starts dropping, he goes off feed. At the end of February, he sheds and then starts eating like a maniac. He's done this now for four years. I keep my snakes in a separate building, and I keep it pretty warm year round. However, they can tell when it gets cooler and this one just goes off feed. He sheds about twice during his fast, and is still pretty active. So maybe your African rock is just fine. Not all snakes do this, but as long as he appears to be healthy and isn't acting unusual, I wouldn't worry too much. If he starts acting strange, losing weight or showing other signs of illness, then I'd start getting concerned.
