Funny thing Syd did today....

-ryan- Jan 19, 2005 09:21 PM

Recently I started messing around with a dirt substrate for Sydney. The first batch I made horribly, because I didn't have a lot to work with. It's not a good mix at all...it's too sandy, so when you add water it turns into mud, and it has a lot of wood chips in it (actually....I added them as a base because I didn't have a lot of dirt), and they all floated to the top. He hasn't licked them or anything yet though, so it will be fine until I can go out (maybe this weekend) and get some better materials to work with.

Anyways, the funny story...ever since I moved him onto dirt, he's been a little more wild. He's been basking with a proud look on his face, and struttin' his stuff around. There really is a noticable change. So I was getting ready to go to a drum lesson when I saw him basking with his head held high, looking all majestic, so I told my mom to go in and look at him. As soon as she walks in she says "Hey Syd", and he just whips around on his basking spot, throws out the black beard, and hisses at her.

Jeesh...usually such a sweet lizard. I guess you just don't want to sneak up on him when he's basking After ten minutes passed he was still in a sort of defensive position with his black beard out, looking a little confused, so I picked him up quick and immediately his black beard went away. What a strange lizard.

Too bad you didn't get a picture, that could've been a "KODAK MOMENT".

I'll have to try the dirt thing myself and see if mine does that also.

Do you keep the dirt moist (mud - you said you added water)? And what kind of wood chips were they? Don't know your experience level and aplologize if you already know this, but high humidity is bad for BD, it causes respiratory problems, and some types of wood chips (cedar in particular) is poisonous.

I'd say I'm pretty experienced with reptiles. I've kept my bearded dragon for over two years (not too long, but you know, it's easy to accumulate knowledge when you have a great interest in it). I also keep a mali uromastyx and a leopard gecko.

With dirt you have to add water to it every now and then (not all over though, in a corner or two). You have to guage the amount of water you put in so it doesn't raise the overall tank humidity. Just enough so that it doesn't turn into dust, you know? The wood chips...I don't like them anyways so when I get new dirt (hopefully this weekend), I'm not going to put them in again. I just mixed them in because I didn't have enough dirt. They are red cypress, so they're safe in the respect of toxicity. Not really in the respect of digestibility, but that's why I'm not going to keep them long.

That's cool man, I just see so many newbies on here trying silly things, sometimes I step in and make sure they know the facts. You obviously got it down (I myself have been in this for about 2 yrs). Thanx for not taking it personally, just a concerned herper!
