A few breeding questions

Melle Jan 19, 2005 10:06 PM

Hello,

I just recently aquired a mature male crested gecko, and I plan on someday breeding him to my 1.5 year old female. I have successfully hatched leopard geckos before, and have been wanting to try my luck with the cresteds. So I have been looking around on various sites and reading up on the breeding of these guys. My new male, of course will be quarantined for a few months before i put him with my female.

anyhoo, a few questions that I havent been able to find good answers to yet. How much should the female weigh ideally before she is bred? and how long after she is bred will she lay the first clutch? I do have an incubator, but from what i read, they have a good hatch rate at normal room temps. But how well do the eggs tolerate temperature fluctuations, and if so how much of a fluctuation? Thanks for any info

most breeders wait until 35 grams. i usually introduce mine at 30G. i separate my females after 30 days of being introduced to make it easier to find eggs, and have found eggs at 30-42 days.
i try to keep the eggs right at 74 degrees. from what i hear crested gecko eggs have a very good tolerance to temperature fluctuation and i would think that 68-80 degrees would be sufficient ( 80 is getting pretty high though)
good luck and just aks if you have any more questions.

About 3 weeks. But, it can take time before the breeding actually occurs. I had a ready to breed female take 3 months before finally laying.

Temperatures fluctuating between 70-80 degrees are fine.

As always I recommend Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care by Philippe de Vosjoli, Frank Fast, and Allen Repashy to all Rhac owners.
