boa hyperactivity?

MyLeftArm Jan 19, 2005 10:08 PM

Does anyone have boas that get super-active (like climbing and climbing) for days on end? Usually my 1 year old male only gets active when hungry but we fed him 4 days ago, then 2 days ago again when he didnt settle down. He seems fine otherwise, although i did notice he has urinated (not urates, wet white spots, very small) each day for the 4 days he has been hyperactive. any thoughts?

Could be sperm, if it is a male!

hmmm, ok... do males have emissions? do they go thru periods of excitability? he is alone, no female around, except me, but i dont think i am his type!

LOL welll the only time my boas get all active its when they are mating. BUT i would go ahead and check the temperature of the tank and make sure that there are enough hides and such. Just make sure he is happy and then they should settle down... Let us know if he calms down and settles in... Good Luck

thanks. I have a vet appt. for Sunday because this amount of moving about is just not like him. He has 2 hides and he usually sits in them with his head poking out... i dont think he has been in a hide in the last 4 days. His behavior, tho fun to watch, is not normal for him. I have checked him over thoroughly, he is not wheezing, he is not constipated, he is just leaving wet white deposits (not typical urates) and he is moving about 24/7. temps are perfect, humidity too. Its baffling.
Here is a photo of my Baby boy.

oh, that meter reading almost 100 is the hotspot. The 2 ends of the tank are 80 days, 75 nights. the floor temp is 82.

Snakes are much more active when they are warmer.. and close to 100 degrees is pretty darn hot!

The rest of your temps sound great, but I would lower that hotspot by atleast 5-10 degrees. If using a hot lamp, try to have it positioned a few inches further from the top of the cage and check the temps.

Has there been a change in temps in your house?
Has there been a change in movement or activity near your Baby's cage?

These are some other things to consider. Maybe something outside the cage is making him uncomfortable, such as a new pet dog or cat, or a new 'addition' to the family.

You can try covering the front with newspaper or something similar and see if he acts differently.

I believe you already have hides in there.. if he's not using them now, maybe switch them to another spot in the tank, where the temps are a bit cooler or warmer, and see if he uses them then.

The white spots sound a bit weird.. i'm sure he is not mature enough to be leaving sperm deposits..

Has he been exposed to a cold draft lately?
Or have you fed him a prey item from a different supplier or pet store?
All these things can have an affect on your Baby.

Please keep us updated as to the progress of your Baby.

Wishing you the best!

hmmm, NOT sexually mature enuf to leave sperm deposits? I was kinda hoping that is what it was. I do have a vet appt. Sunday. Even if he seems fine, i will bring him in to be checked over.
I did lower the temp last night to 70 overnight and he did seem much more simmered down this morning, hanging out on the bottom instead of climbing. He is not using his hides, he seems to be hanging out dead center of the tank, so i will try moving one of his hides to that spot.
No new additions to the house, house is colder due to colder temps outside, maybe i over-compensated for that and made the tank too hot for him. The 90 degrees is the spot right under the bulb on the top of the tank, i have another meter at floor level right in that same spot that reads 85 as the hotspot temp.
I will continue to cool it off a bit and monitor.
Thanks as always, Joe, for your help!

Check your temps it may be to hot. Too warm of temps makes their metabolism to active. Hopefully you have a cool spot also so he/she can thermoregulate. Or check for mites, they will move a lot to get away from mites. I hope this helps.

thanks for advice.

Hi All.
We took Baby to the vet even though after we lowered the tank temps, he did calm down back to normal speed. I was concerned about the "piddling' he was doing in the tank (not full, chalky urates, just white, wet spots, one each day for 4 days.)
The vet said he is healthy, in perfect condition and that he probably just drank alot of water b/c we adjusted the tank temp too high to compensate for the cold weather.
Thanks to all those who helped, especially Joe Rollo, as always!
By the way, the vet was in Astoria, New York. Real high-tech place that uses cameras to look in the snakes mouth etc and record size of snake etc. and they give you 4 glossy b/w shots from the visit! The vet has handled everything from monkeys to birds to snakes to pot-belly pigs.
I would recommend the place for all new yorkers!
