Nesting Boxes

BeardieKid14 May 15, 2003 10:00 PM

Could anyone post a picture of describe the nesting box they use for their female to lay eggs? What do you use as a substrate in the nesting box, vermilcite, perlite, or something else?

Thanks,
Adam Hallquist

Sorry no camera. I have a forty gallon long tank so I use a Sterilite plastic shoebox wuth a 2 inch entry hole at one end. I use bed-a-beast with a very slight amount of perlite just to break it up a bit. Perlite alone should not be used it would be rough on them digging.

Most people use something similar to a coolwhip container, glad container, or butter tub.

Cut an access hole near the top, and fill about an inch with moist vermiculite, peatmoss, moss, bed-a-beast, etc...

Good luck with your eggs.

This is a 'top of the line' lay box, made from a clear Ziploc container. It allows you to watch the geckos wile they dig the place up. Most of my other ladies have butter containers; I can’t afford fancy boxes everyone. I use vermiculite in them all, and also the entrance should be cut from the lid of your container. Don’t worry about her getting in and out; geckos are good at pull-ups. If you put your hole on the side, you will end up with vermiculite everywhere. I mist them every other day, and this has been working great. I tried moss a few times, but the eggs didn’t seem to do as well. Good luck!
