Lost Tails vs Breeding success

mountain_goat Jan 19, 2005 11:53 PM

I was just thinking tonight and I found myself with a question I could not answer. I have observed in my henkeli that tail waving seems to often be a prelude to breeding activity. My male will often wave at his partner repeatedly before moving towards her and following her around the terrarium and attempting to breed, depending on if she is interested. But I know that in some Uroplatus species, it is debatabe weather or not all species can regenerate their tails. So in the ones which possibly can't, do you think that would effect breeding success? I wonder how important these visual cues may be? Has anyone else noticed an increased amount of tail waving around breeding? Just thought this was interesting...

whil;e i will agree that tails are used to attcract females , tail loss is not nessicarily a bad thing. i have a male phant who is tailless, he has been this way since the day i got him. he has no problem in breeding and i have 3 babies and 2 eggs that i am incubating from his pairning with a female, so they must not need the tail in every case..
