Pacmans Housed together?

sw0rdf15h Jan 20, 2005 12:24 AM

I've considered many different references and studies, but have yet to find any consistant information. One source says no, Pacman frogs should NEVER be housed together because they will be cannabalistic. Another says only juveniles will be aggressive, but once adult (and fed well) they won't do any harm. Yet another view was that if the frogs are the same size, they won't attempt to eat eac other. I was wondering if anyone had knowledge of these claims? thanks in advance

Ok, maybe this won't help much, but here it goes:
I have heard the same as you, some say they can be succesfully housed together(which I have never done) and some say that they can't.
My view is that it is an unnecessary risk. They are probably sometimes, from what I've heard, housed quite succesfully together when adults and well fed (as you mentioned), yet, who says that they can't snap at each other and inflict damage or even try to swallow their tankmate(which could result in one dying from being swallowed and one suffocating).
I don't think that you'll get a 100% answer on this question, but my oppinion is that they shouldn't be housed together.

Well I understand your point about it being an unessecary risk, but if there IS a way to house together with minimal risk, it would be a great convenience. I say this because I have two young Pacs who will soon outgrow their tanks. One is in a 2.5 gallon tank, and the other is in a 5 gallon tank. Both have two tank heaters each and a very nice temperature/humidity system. Obviously they will eventually need to be moved. Setting up two 10-20 gallon tanks, getting two new heaters for each, getting temp/hum dials for each, and lighting hoods for each would be a huge economical and spacial. investment. I'm ready to provide all this, but if they can be safely housed in one big tank, I'd obviously opt for that. Thanks for your help.
also, a friend's view on them matter was that if no obvious part of the pacman is able to fit into the other's mouth, he will not attempt to eat him because pacman frogs are swallowing hunters, not biting. I have no conclusive info on this matter though.

Yeah, I see your point. What I meant with "Snapping" was that they may try to eat the other one, anyway that's what mine does. He/she "snapps" at most things that are moving, wether it is my hand or the tongs.
And about the fact that a pacman probably won't be able to swallow the other one beceause it is too big, may very well be true. The only thing that I've heard about Pacmans swallowing each other is a clip from Animal Planet (or Discovery).
I think it was Ginevive who mentioned the clip.

I'm not a frog specialist by any means, but why not by a big tank, divided it in half, place all you heating and lighting stuff in the middle. by placing everything in the middle you are stil giing each animal a heat gradient on the own sides.. this will low both animals the freedom, if pacman's really need alot of this, of a bigger cage plus allow you to only need one new tank and supplies... just a thought.. why take the risk of losing one or both????

The decision is entirely up to you. Are you willing to risk it? I personally had two juv pixies together with absolutely no prob. until one of them died(found him dead with his stomach hanging out his mouth)and they never made one attempt against eachother, they would actually split nightcrawlers and rip them apart together.

I have seen the animal planet's most extreme clip where they had pac's calling them "wide mouth frogs" and they showed footage of a pac with another pac of the same size hanging halfway out his mouth(wouldn't fit) and they stated that the frog will attempt to eat frogs their same size and will suffocate themselves. At which point the uneaten frog will then continue on, that is assuming I guess that it wasnt badly injured from being almost eaten.

let us know the decision and outcome... Jon

I honestly wouldn't try it. My boyfriend has two pac mans and would never attempt to put them together. As others have said, why take the risk? If you're that concerned about spending money on the set up for two different tanks (which I understand, being in college) divide the tank. You can get dividers that are made for aquariums so you can adjust the size of the space - they have holes so air can flow between the two sides - but the frogs can't get to eachother. Just because one can't eat the other doesn't mean they won't hurt eachother. My boyfriend has been bitten by his frogs before and they've actually drawn blood (they're both close to a pound). The choice is entirely up to you but I wouldn't risk it.
