Rudis or sambava?

chimbakka Jul 05, 2003 09:49 AM

I am going to start breeding chameleons sometime in the next year. It's NOT for money, as I'm sure those who know me know. I just want to experience it. I have decided on either sambava panthers or rudis chameleons. I saw some on calumma and they are SOOOO precious! I need some advice from people experienced, or who know about, either or both. I'm probably going to go with sambava just because they are easier to keep and this is my first attempt at breeding.
I won't be buying my pair until fall. I want to get the cages and everything built first. I was thinking about breeding Orion, but I don't know what her full bloodlines are. If I go with Sambava then I will probably breed Orion and sell her babies as a cross. I'm so excited! I have the baby itch!

Both species are fun to breed. The Panthers are Oviparous (egg layers) and the Rudis is Viviparous (Live Bearers) which both can be very rewarding and fun to watch. But if you breed Panthers, please do not purposely breed different locales. Panthers should be breed and pure locales maintained. Yes the animals can be very beautiful but for the integrity of the Chameleons they should be maintained pure specially with all the trouble with importing more animals from Madagascar. With the troubles importing this means that the animals here in the US might become the only ones and therefore should be maintained and protected to ensure the survivability of the specis and locales. Mixing locales will do more harm in the future than good in my opinion.
