Have to replace a cage - brand, size recommendations

koashmar Jan 20, 2005 12:04 PM

Hi all, I haven't posted much on this board lately, but some of you may remember that I have a 2 1/2 foot corn.

He is currently residing is a 20L with a sliding screen top. One of my kitties recently did something she rarely does and sat on his cage (or at least that's what I'm assuming happened as I've caught her pudgy tush up there before). Something about his cage she likes...she doesn't do this with the other herps I've got. Anyway, the screen gave a little and one entire section came out of the lid. I'm lucky my snake was still when I returned home!

I currently have it ducktaped on both sides and it seems to be holding up well, but tanks at the local petco are on sale, so I've considered purchasing him a new one.

Here's my questions - I am interested in something other than the traditional glass w/sliding lid. I really like the look of the all mesh ones. I suspect they may be difficult to heat though as it seems all the heat would disipate. What's your take on this?

If I go with glass, I am debating between just replacing the 20L or going with the 29H. Both are the same floor dimensions, the 29 is just significantly taller. It's only about a $25 price difference, so if he'll use the added height I'll get him that one. Otherwise I'll stick with the 20L - which he seems to be doing fine in.

My other question is that he is chowing down on FT mouse fuzzies. I feed him 3 each week and he seems like he would take more. I tried to feed him a full size mouse and he wasn't interested in the least. He acted like he didn't even recognize it as food. At what size should I push him to upgrade? For now, how many fuzzies should I be letting him have?

Thanks in advance.

We originally had our 4 year old male, Slink, in a 20L aquarium with locking lid but now he is in one of the reptariums (the mesh things). I find it easier because it has a zipper (which he has never gotten out of), has a continual air flow so the air doesn't get stale or too hot, and I like the practicality of cleaning. On the other hand, he is in our "pet" room which is kept at 77-80 F during the day and around 74-75 at night. He's doing fine. I don't believe that it's too hard to heat, I hardly ever see him out by the heat, but that could be because of the temperature in the room. Like I said, I like them and they're much easier/lighter than aquariums. If you're interested I know somewhere that is very cheap to get them (the only place that sells them around here is Petsmart and they charge around twice of this place). Just drop me an email. Hope I helped a little.

You can buy heavier steel mesh screen tops.I think there 10 dollars. They can take a good beating and hold up well.At 2 1/2 feet small mice are the ticket. One way to get your corn to feed is dont feed for a couple of weeks. This has worked for me.Or you could try rat pups if there easy to obtain.I feed my juvies once a week and my adults once every 2-3 weeks. They just get fat and lazy if I feed them large mice more than that...Paul

Pad a mousetrap and set it up there.Kitty will only do it once and if you pad the steel with some gauze it wont do any harm..Paul
