question

my adult female carpet is refusing to part with what she has eaten. looks like someon stuck a softball in her tail. i need to get her to the vet but i make very little money so i dont have $32 to hand to them just for me to say "give it some time". she hasnt done anything in over 2 months and i feel cautious about feeding her anymore as she has eaten 2 large rats and so far she is just getting bigger in the back. does anyone know what the vet will usually do in a situation like this and average price of the procedure? i have to save up my money before i take her. also, before anyone says it, ive tried the bathtub thing like 4 or 5 times and she still refused. i think she may be impacted.

Hmmmmmm......sounds like she may have a slight constipation problem if she has not gone in that long. Usually the tub trick works with some mild stroking of the swollen area. In your case I think immediate medical help may be the only option. Regarding the financial situation....you can do what I do. I take my snakes to the local Veterinary Science Dept. at MSU Campus and I always tell them what a poor college student I am(it's the truth) and they are very generous on the prices of the procedures.

pythonis Jan 21, 2005 02:33 AM

well im not a college student and the local college here doesnt have a "herpetologist". and as far as her being constipated,well.......duh!

What's the deal with folks asking questions and then being rude to those who respond? I thought Matt gave you some decent info. So what's with the attitude?

.....if anyone else thought that was rude. I was only trying to be a little humurous, but helpful at the same time. I have almost decided my time should be spent elsewhere.

janome Jan 22, 2005 04:21 AM

I thought that was rude as well. If folks don't want advice then they shouldn't be posting messages. I love these forums and getting messages like that is so childish and not worth the time of day.

AdamWaldofsky Jan 22, 2005 02:45 PM

completely abandoned this forum!!!! Folks like to ask questions and then when someone gives them an answer they act like a 10 yr old if it wasn't the answer they wanted to hear. I sure am glad there is somewhere decent on the web for those of us that share a true mutual interest in Morelia.

pythonis Jan 23, 2005 06:07 AM

becaquse anyone knows that if something cant take a crap then it is constipated. i was born at night but it wasnt last night.

....it seems like you may have a slight case of irritable bowel syndrome yourself. You knew the snake was constipated, so did I, and so did everyone else. I wasn't diagnosing your snake with constipation, I think you'd already done that. I was just simply stating the fact that because of the problem, being constipation, that you should seek medical advice from a professional. You may not have been born yesterday, so start aacting like it. Politeness goes a long way, rudeness turns off many the first time it's accomplished.

gee, didnt know everyone on these boards were so sensitive. guess i hung around my army buddies too long and just got used to being able to tell each other anything we felt and then laughing about it. so i guess if i need anymore info on anything i will just ask someone else in my hometown cause it seems that i cant say hello without somebody in here getting offended by it in some weird way.

Hey, you know something, that's a good idea, ask someone else for now on. This is not the place to be rude to people who are trying to help.

mattbrock Jan 24, 2005 10:12 AM

Pythonis contacted me and we both apologized for having a bad day. SO problem solved, don't beat him up for it too much guys.

janome Jan 20, 2005 09:20 PM

that is a long time. sometimes what works for my 3 year old 6 foot JCP is just letting her have some good stretching/excercise in the back yard. 'safari' has gone many times for me that way. i let her have run of the back yard (with my supervision only of course)for like 1/2 hour to an hour. but i also agree she may need vet assistance.

pythonis Jan 21, 2005 02:31 AM

well, i cant get her outside for any exercise cause its about 30 degrees here. i do take her out 2 or 3 times a week and let her crawl around on me but i cant give her free reign cause she's about 7.5 ft and we have 3 cats and a dog that we dont really feel like losing.
this is what she is lloking like in her tail end.

this is what she has been dropping periodically over the last few weeks.

well, when i let mine out i lock the dogs and cats in another room so that they are not near the snake and let her crawl up and down the hall way. don't you think it's worth a try.

pythonis Jan 23, 2005 06:16 AM

its like when someone says, "hey my snake wont shed" and someone says "looks like your snake might be having a shedding problem". well no [bleep] it is having a shedding problem. thats why the person is asking for our help. i guess i shouldve been more precise in my questions and said "hey, has anyone ever taken a constipated snake to the vet and how much did it cost to have the problem taken care of?" sorry if i seemed rude.

Yasser Jan 21, 2005 04:25 PM

She most likely has a large urate clump or fecal obstruction that in my experience will only be helped by soaks in warm water for up to 12 hours at a time every other day along with lots of physical stimulation like others have stated. I have also used a mineral oil/warm water enema before that worked very well. It was a 1:4 ratio well mixed right before administration. Ya shoot it up her bum (I'd mix about 20ccs for one your size) and massage it up further a bit. Then try to get the snake to hold it. It will often willingly hold it but if it tries to expel it immediately, try to manually pinch her shut to hold it in for at least a 5 minutes.
After that, there's surgery to remove the obstruction.
Good luck.
