Making money as a self taught Herpetologist?

Not sure if this belongs here. If not please direct me accordingly
Ok lets see where do I start? I hope this post make some what since to someone. I am “in the crudest form” a self trained herpetologist “uneducated in the main stream” you get the idea. I was wondering were about Herpetologists make there money? One would assume from a zoo or another organization that hires them to conduct research am I correct? What about those who wish to go at it on there own? I know there are those out there that don’t wish to work for “the man” and would rather work independently, how do those go about making there money? By selling there research? Righting books? To be strait forward yes I would like to make money in this field. I don’t need to make a “living” just enough cash flow to help out with projects and research a little bit. I am sure there are those of you out there that can second me when I say that conducting this kind of work can be extremely expensive. I have a very good job that pays me enough to live fairly well and do well pretty much what ever I want but unfortunately that comes with many 16 hour days and 7 day weeks so its not feasible to go and take some course at a local collage when in all truth I would most likely miss a ton of classes do to “16 hour days and 7 day weeks” Basically all I am looking into is the possibility of a supplemental income to help out with this “hobby” of mine. I am not even concerned if I come out in the negative after any project or research in concluded but the supplemental income would help out greatly. I would imagine on that same note that there is considerable work to be done and investments to be made before anything can or will be earned. As with anyone working for themselves they must invest in supplies before they can build something or sell it, As well as possibly a building to do this in or trucks for delivery “you get the idea I am sure” Anyway I will stop babbling now” Thank you in advance for any help or insight anyone can give on this matter.

I think we all know exactly how you feel. I certainly wish I could be a self-taught professional herper, however it is difficult to find even regular naturalist jobs and those that do exist require no experience, are seasonal or just arent taken seriously. The job is always combined with something of greater public appeal like historical program, tours or manual labor. Pure research jobs are even harder to find for us antiacademics. I am unable to pursue out-of-state internships because my collection of captive herps must come with me. I think there are many volunteer opportunities available to you though. There is a group in my state called "Snake Getters", independent herpers who are called up to deal with indoor reptile situations (whose adventures must be memorable and profitable). Being a merit badge instructor for the Boy Scouts is another option (such as Reptile Study). Doing this has earned me influence in the local nature center unequalled by any patron in its history. Part-time or volunteer positions at outdoor facilities during the summer may also give you access to otherwise restricted herping for use in programs as you see fit. Good luck to you.
