new pacman: need help

fredharris Jan 20, 2005 04:10 PM

i just got suprised with a baby pacman(a little bigger than a quarter) as a present and i have a heating question. its in a 10 gal tank w/ alot of moss for it to burrow in. my apartment is usually kept at around 70 degrees. i know i need more heat, but ive heard some opinions that say UTH are bad b/c it could burn its stomach and others have said that a bulb would dry it out. i would really appreciate some specific advise including which heating method and even what brand/wattage you use. thanx a million from me and morrie.

What you can do is put an under the tank heater on the side of the aquarium. The heater only needs to heat the air. Also, I'm pretty sure incandesent (normal) bulbs will dry it out but not UV lights, especially colored ones (black light, red light). this would be more comfortable for the frog but if around 70 is your low temp, it should probably be fine. I mean, it's not recommended but pet stores seem to keep their pacs alive for months at least with no heat source whatsoever.

what wattage heaters/lights do u recommend to heat the ten gal. about 10 degrees. i understand that itd probably be ok at the lower temp, i just want it to be happy and active. thanx for the help.

A 60 watt bulb should be ok, and pacmans really arent active at all.

I think a 60 watt light would make a ten gallon way too hot if the temp is already 70 degrees. Right now I have a 15 watt blue night heat bulb and another 15 watt white heat bulb that I turn off at night. I would say my house is about 75 degrees and my pacmans tank is about 83 degrees.
