the black bug

JIM240 Jan 20, 2005 05:20 PM

today i fed my lizard, and i'm shaking the tube, and like no crix come out for a while. then out comes like 2 and a black bug. it looked like a centipede or something, maybe mealworm, but way small, and black. well, koko ate it immediately. i'm worried. i should sue or something. i got small crix and an unidentified black bug with em. i'm worried that she's going to like die now. do you know what this little black thing with many legs couldv'e been? thanks MIKE

just teasin
I don't know the name of the critter but I have seen em!
I can't think of any insect that a collared won't take in stride!!
I had a pair that I kept outside in AZ that LOVED bees and wasps!!
I have a female that eats HUGE wolf spiders!
Collareds are the little T-rexes of north american lizards!

I've seen those in my crickets shipments, too. I never hesitated to throw them in along with the crix. Nobody died . . . except a few bugs, that is.

I've fed some to my side-blotched lizard in the past.

My husband read in a book about Black Widows at the visitor center in Death Valley National Park that almost all lizards are immune to black widow venom. Anyways, that's nice to know but I'm not feeding my babies Black Widows...

I've seen those in with the crickets from some cricket sellers. The place I buy from nowadays, reptilefood.com, doesn't seem to be infested with them; I haven't seen one alien bug in the seven or eight orders I've placed. (I assume it's okay to mention their name since they advertise here!) I doubt they're harmful to the collareds, but if they bother you you might try switching to a different vendor.
