MALE OR FEMALE?? NOT SURE NOW

gavinclews Jan 20, 2005 05:33 PM

I bought a beardie off a woman advertising on a site. I advertised for a female and she answered me so i went and bought it a couple of months ago. She lives in my breeding tank with my females and the male. They havent been very active over the last few months due to a temp drop as i live in england and now its warming up, they are becoming active again. The thing is, now its coming into season, the beardie that i thought was a female is doing the head bobbing thing with a black beard. It isnt a female looking headbob either, its the same as my male does and im starting to worry. I think i may have bought another male. The two of them arent fighting or anything so what do you all think?? I know females do it sometimes but not like this i dont think but it does have the head shape and body size of a female

Head shape and body size are pretty much worthless when sexing beardies. Look for the hemipenile bulges instead. Also, why do you have them living together? It's not a good idea and can be very hard on them especially if they are different sizes. Plus what happens when they breed?

Thats the idea!

If that's the idea you'll have better luck cycling out your male 1 week on 1 week off and repeat until your girls take.

Yeah i know. They usually do but i have put them all together while my viv is being built. I am having a stack of vivs built ready for the new season so i can split my females and my male and put them in for breeding only. Thanx for the advice i know you are only trying to help.Im normally ok with sexing but for some reason, this one is more dificult than i have seen before. Do females head bob as violently as males? I certanly have never seen it and thats what made me wonder. Do you have any advice on what methods you use for breeding? The viv stack will be here in about a week so they will be split so how often and how long do you introduce your females to the males den?? I bred last year but as it was my females first year she only laid one clutch of 18 and im hoping for a better year this time around. Any advice would be helpfull as i have just bought a nice coloured girl i wouldnt mind having a go with

I am not an "Expert" but as I understand it a femail can be more agressive and most...

the head bob is any dragon way of challenging another dragon for "top dragon" status. if you mix up some feamils then the more active ones may have to sort out who's the boss and yes that can lead to a fight and other problems.

the other thing is as you said you may have a male ...

so seperate and see if it's a he or a she and then figure out what's best

IMHO anyway....
