A real sad day for me...........

JohnLokken Jul 05, 2003 10:40 AM

Well, my first breeding attempt was a flop. My hypo monstertail drop 7 premies and about 15 slugs. I was really hoping for babies this year. But, alas..........No. I will be giving her a years break at least and then try the breeding again. Hopefully I can get some babies then.

If there is any good to come from this.......I now know she can be become pregnant and push out her babies. She was injured a while back that gave her a kink in her tail region. I was unsure if that would have affected her. So, that is good news. Now to give her a nice long break and let her "fatten" up.

It really is sad to see though. Boas really are delicate parents. After she was done.......She was checking on her "babies". I feel really bad for her.

Don't give up! and, though I know it's not much consolation,Try not to be too dicouraged, their first litters aren't always their best,or,most successful...fatten her up,and, try again this season,(if she looks good) then give her a year off? the best results are not often easiest to obtain, your dedication to your animals care will pay off in the end!

what a disappointment that is thru first hand experience.

I am so sorry, John! My husband and I have bred many different kinds of critters on this farm for many years - mostly mammals though - and have experienced this kind of disappointment and grief. We understand what you are going through and hope with all our hearts that the next breeding will be a complete success.

give her a break. ALOT of people would just try again the following season. You sir are a true herper. Best of luck. So far this yr...I've got 14 slugs : (

All of my first time females crapped out last year...based on their condition, and, their ability to recover from the strain of last season,I bred every single one of them this year, and, they all produced, and, they look fantastic,no problems, and, are recovering nicely...NOW they'll get this year off, they certainly deserve it! I can tell you without a doubt, they mean every bit as much to me,as I believe John's animal does to him. I believe Rich Ihle bred his Sharp strain female 2 yrs in a row? I think it all depends on the ability to assess the animals overall condition, rather than what the calandar says? just my 2 cents, but, ultimately do what YOU think is right...

Let that gal fatten up the next time you will have all good ones.

JohnLokken Jul 05, 2003 01:31 PM

Wow, I knew I would be bummed about this.....But, man.......I am down right depressed. What is suprising to me is that my wife (who is knod of into herps.....But, not really) is really sad about this as well. We both really feel like it is a loss.

My monster produced 7 premies. 5 where hypos and 2 were normals. Nice odds huh? Well, next time.

I took some pics of the babies...Kind of morbid in a way. But, I really want to remember what they looked like....And, in a way honor the fact that they were here for a short time. They really looked nice!! The Monster genes seemed to be the stronger or the two. I am sure the EBV genes would have shown up in the coloration. But, there were a couple EBV look a likes with monster tails.

Anyway, if anyone finds it interesting you can sheck out the link and look at them.

Thanks again all my fireinds for the kind words. They really do make me feel better about this.

The babies have been buried in the back yard. I will buy a plant to place over them today or tomorrow. That sounds like a good thing to do for me.

Geez, that's a shame because those babies were very pretty. Sorry to hear of your setback but at least you know the parents are fertile and what the offspring will look like. I don't think I'd have the patience to wait out next season but I guess it's best for the animal so all the best next time.

I know how much you were looking forward to this litter. I looked at the pics and those babies were so pretty. I know this is heartbreaking for you. Email me later...

and such events divide the tough ones from the weaklings. The former say "Next game, new luck" and the latter give up.

The main thing is that she had been able to deliver. Egg-binding would have been much worse.

In conclusion a tip: don't faten her up too much because this can also be a reason for an decrease in fertility (slugs, premature babies).

John,

It's always sad when this type of thing occurs. My hopes are for a more successful try next time.

We know how you were hoping for those babies.

Keep your chin up, man. She came through healthy, so you can always try again. I'm sure she will produce some amazing babies for you one day. Take care, buddy.

We know how you feel! It's very disappointing and it always is hard when you loose snakes. Keep your head up and there is always next year.

I'm sure that she will push out some beautiful, healthy babies for you the next time around.
Take care,

I'm so sorry to hear about this. I can't imagine how sad and disappointed you are about the babies. I looked at the photos you took of them and it looked like there were some real beauties there. Like you said...I guess you'll just have to look at the bright (however dim it may be) side of things...at least your girly is okay and you know that she can push out babies with no problem. There's always next time...
