Few questions from future owner

deuce02 Jan 20, 2005 05:50 PM

Im really thinking hard about getting into rhac's. I found 2 at a local pet store, one looks a light grey the other is a fantastic redish color. I was told i can take both for $80. Is this a decent price for juvenilles? Also, what kind of housing is recommended. I will have a nice 30"x16"x16" cage that will be available soon. Do you recommend housing more then one? how many would do well in the cage described? Housing males together a no?

sorry for the long post and multiple questions. I just want to make sure i know what im getting into prior to purchasing. Also if anyone knows a decent way to sex them, and or pics that would be fantastic!
thanks

If the rhacs at the pet store are R. Ciliatus (crested geckos) then that is definitely a better price than I have ever paid for two of them. Males together is a no. I have five cresteds and here is how they are housed - One sub-adult female in a ten gallon tank with screen top. One male and one female in a 20gal tall(my breeding cage). One adult gravid female in a tupperware tote that is about the equivilant of a 10gal tank(I use this tank for gravid females because it is a little more private). And finally one adult male in a 10gal tank. I believe the minimum requirement for housing more than two would be a 20gal tall, some will say larger, but I sometimes have one male and two females in my 20 tall until one of the females is gravid, then she is removed. After she lays her eggs, I switch her with the other female, and rotate the males. Hope this helps!

OK,
i went last night and got everything set up. I then went this morning and got the lil guys. Here are a few pics of them and their set ups. let me know your opinion.
thanks a ton

Here is a pic of the really nice orange/red one i picked up this morning. He shows a much brighter color then what is showing up on the pics. The other is more of a gray color but has a lot of black spots on its body. Again, i got both for $80. Not sure what sex yet, they are still pretty small.

thanks again

I put them both in their own enclosures. The smaller red one is in a 10 gallon and the larger is in a 20 gallon tall. Let me know if theres anything i should change. They both seem to be adapting to their new homes ok so far and both have eaten baby food within the first 10 mins of being here. The top pic is the 20 and bottom the 10.

Also, what morph would you call my cresteds? i dont really care if their anything but im just interested. thanks

1st off......i don't know how young they are.....but you should have them on papertowel if they're that young......not bed-a-beast,imho. 2nd, I'd say the 1st one is a Dalmation for sure....the other one looks a bit thin to me, but you got a good deal; for $80.

The crested with the spots is definitely a dalmation with maybe a little orange/tiger. The second has a dalmation in his blood line, and looks like a light rust or salmon. The cages look good, plenty of hiding spots. I used baby food when I first got my cresteds but now I use Crested Gecko Diet mixed exactly the way the instructions say to. Baby food has a lot of sugar in it so I followed someone elses lead and eliminated the baby food. I also feed them crickets about every other or every third day. When using crested gecko diet it is not neccasery to feed insects. I also use paper towel for the bottom (substrate) in my cages. I do this to make sure that my cresteds are pooping regularly. When I used the substrate that you have, and added baby food I got COMPLETELY infested with fruit flies! it was horrible. All in all everything looks good, just make sure they are eating, if you dont see them eating but you see scat in the cages then they are eating. The second crested looks a bit skinny, but I would blame that on them being in the pet store, I know when I bought some of my little guys they werent eating good at the store, but they fattened right up after a week or two. Good luck with them! btw here is my dalmation, the pattern on his back is the orange/tiger pattern...
