does this look odd to anyone else???????

TomChambers Jan 20, 2005 06:52 PM

this is my first girl to ovulate this season.

Does the swelling look a bit towards the rear to you???

this is just my second season breeding, but I thought last year the swelling was more towards the center of the body??

It varies, I had a couple ovulate that way last year. Mostly towards the middle, but sometimes by there.
Nothing weird. Sometimes though its a big poop, youll see in a couple days?

no i'm 99% sure she's ovulating .

she feels like she is full of air, and she hasn't eaten in 3 months, so I don't think there is that kind of poop left in her.

I've been wrong before though, so you never know.

Thanks for letting me know that lower swelling isn't unheard of.

I always notice ovulation way down the lower 2/3rds of the body. Its when they are gravid that they seem more swelled all over. That ovulation looks smaller than normal, but heck, these snake always surprise us! I hope that it works out for you! Keep us updated. I would be neat to able to somewhat calculate clutch size based on the ovulation if you forget to palpate before hand.

A few post ovulations and one ovulation ending:

thanks jeff,

That is a big 3300 gram girl(before breeding season).I thought it looked small too.
could her large size make it look small??

She is a proven breeder for me from last year, but the male is a little small(800-900g) ghost.

I don't know about his breeding viability, since he hasn't produced for me yet.

Thanks

More and more every year, and with takling to other long-time breeders, skinnier (not skinny) animals can still give great clutches. Sometimes better than the fatties. My prediction is that you'll be PLEASANTLY surprised with that clutch man!

Keep us updated.

Thin healthy girls of any snake species will usually give you better clutches on average. A fat snake is pretty much a one or two time producer, then it's down hill from there, (infertile or no eggs) unless she is thinned out. By fat, I mean FAT, not pleasently plump...LOL.

She looks great to me, good luck.

I was unclear with my post, I'll blame lack of sleep.

I didn't mean the female was small, she has good size, I meant the size of the ovulation looked small.

thanks for the reply

Tom, I miss the ovulation about half the time. Unless I open the cage at the right time, it's not always obvious. Sometimes, I will actually put them on the floor to get a better, extended look. My snakes typically ovulate around mid-late March so I don't even start looking until then.

I wasn't expecting anything until next month, so I haven't been checking too often yet.

But, she was sleeping in her water bowl for a week straight, so I thought she was going to shed. She’s a strange one; she will sleep in the water bowl sometimes during shed cycles no matter what the humidity is.

After a week with no signs of shed I pulled her out to take a look.

Now she is on the warm side for the first time since Aug. when she was eating strong.

Not really. I've seen it before. I would not worry to much.

Tom, just out of curiosity, when did you start to cool her?

I started cooling the room Mon Sept 6.

It was already cold at nights here in upstate NY (it was a weird summer temperature wise).

Also some of my females already started slowing down on there eating, so I figured I could get in a month of cooling while they were still eating sporadically.
I think it worked out; this year they seem to have more fat reserves later into their breeding season.

I think so, but it might be the ending.

I haven't been checking regularly, I thought it was still too early.

last year she laid 3 good eggs, and 2 slugs.

You might have caught it later than last year. Looks good.
