Question for Homer.

dvknight May 15, 2003 10:05 PM

A while back, you posted about a Lights of America flourescent worklight that put out over 5000k. Please let me know how this product has worked out for your plants, as well as if you've seen it on the shelves in any stores lately. I have checked all of my local Walmarts and Home Depots and have been unable to find it. I'd like to put this unit to work on my new thirty gallon, but a) I can't find it and b) I'd like some input as to how well it has performed. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.

David

P.S. I have seen what I believe is a similar model made by GE, but it does not give the specs on the packaging. I will try to investigate this.

Sorry, David, but I posted an excerpt from an e-mail that was sent to me by A.J. Calisi (of T&C Terrariums). I did find that model at my local Super Wal-Mart for about $25, but that was about 6 months ago. Anyway, before I purchased lighting I came across some industrial compact fluorescent fixtures at an architectural salvage yard for $8 per fixture with 3 40 watt CF bulbs in each. I couldn't pass that up, and bought 3 (hey, you can't even buy bulbs that cheap).

So, to make a long story short, I didn't buy that model. I was just passing along the advice given to me by A.J. If you look up the old post, I think his e-mail stated that he has used them with great success for moss and bromeliads. However, others have indicated to me that this particular model is hard to find and only found at some Wal-Mart Stores.

Sorry I'm not much help on this one,

they are hard to find, i looked at lowes, wal-mart, and home depot. your best bet is to just pay $40 and buy it off ebay.

You can use a repti-glo 2.0 6700K bulb from most pet stores. They are working great for me. I'm sure they are a bit more than some other bulbs, but if thats all you can find local.

This site has some 6700k daylight bulbs for a good price:

Hope that helps,

On my 50 gallon, I use 1 Exo-terra 2.0 and 1 5.0, as well as a 48 in. GE Plant and Aquarium bulb. I use 4 48 in. Plant and Aquarium bulbs for my 20 gallon high and 10 gallon (these have shown to promote EXCELLENT growth). I want to try this other fixture, because it would fit perfectly on my 30 gallon, and for the fact that I like to try new things! I just emailed Lights of America to try to track it down. Thanks for everyone's help.

Dave
