UVB lighting...Who uses it and who doesn't?

Geckos_R_Me Jan 21, 2005 12:24 AM

Hi everybody,

I was just wondering who on here uses UVB lighting for their cresteds and who doesn't? I've heard that giving them UVB might bring out their coloring more but I don't know if that is true or not. I'm debating on whether I want to keep it on my cresteds or not.

Thanks, Jess

Moisture and darkness bring out their colors just fine. I don't know anyone who uses UVB light for their Cresteds.

I do not use any additional heating or lighting. My cresteds colors usually come out when I mist their cage and turn out the lights, or when I take them out to clean their cage. Usually whenever they are active their colors come out. -Joe

I do, but it's for the live plants not really for the gecko. I just cut the supplements in half due to the UVB.

Jess,

Whoever told you that it helps their color is blowing smoke... It may with some animals, but not Cresteds.

As for them needing it, they don't. They're nocturnal lizards, so they hide when the lights are on.

I wouldn't do it, but if you do keep UVB on them, make sure not to oversupplement with Vitamin D3, which is easy to do when you're providing UVB. You could use a Calcium only supplement, but then you're going to have to worry about whether or not your cresteds are really absorbing the UVB (since they hide during the day).

In my opinion, there's no reason to provide UVB and there's a very good reason not to.
