How well can they see in the dark?

Elwood54 Jan 21, 2005 02:26 AM

I'm just curious to know how well my Cresteds see their prey (crickets) in the pitch black. Basically what I need to know is whether or not I should provide a light source at night when it's feeding time.

Thanks

all of my cresteds are very good hunters during the night. i think the sound of the crickets moving is what allows them to hunt. its not vision at all.

Just take a look at a crested gecko. Their eyes are quite large relative to their heads, in addition look how wide their pupils open at night..Also their ears are very basic in structure, if I remember correctly only able to hear low frequency sounds, but I could be wrong on their hearing capabilities.

These animals are clearly wired for movement. Just like humans.

One of my males is a very aggressive eater. I noticed one night when I was watching him that if I wiggled my finger in front of him he would follow it. My finger was in mid air and making no noise and he followed it so they are definitely visual.

You should put in some red lights. But not for the geckos..for you .Cresties are never more animated then when hunting .I love watching them hunt and capture crickets. Been over a year now and I havent tired of it one bit.

The geckos themselves will do just fine without extra lighting ..In nature they live with heavy tree cover..Its certainly a very dark enviorment .
