NM Pryo and leps

chas3323 Jan 21, 2005 10:51 AM

I am going to be in Las Cruses this comming may for a week and was wanting to do a little field herping/photography while I was out there. I have never been herping in NM befor so I was doing a little research now. My first question is about the time. Is may to early or cool? My target animals are pryo and leps, should I hunt at night or daytime? I know I will need an out of state hunting lisc. and there is a "Bag limit" but I was looking for more detail. If you would rather e-mail me I would love to chat with anyone. Or if you work with NM Pryo or C.l.kaluberi I would love to chat about your projects as well.

Thank you for your time,
Shane Dobson (S.Texas)

You'll have to head west or northwest to find pyros and you can find klauberi from Las Cruces and the same places you find pyros. If you head into the Gila (Black Range, etc), you will find most during the day as I believe it gets a little too cool at night at that elevation. I've never found a klauberi, but the 2 pyros I've found (one live, one DOR) were out in the day. Both were found in June in the Gila.

I believe the bag limit for both species is 2, although I'm not totally sure on pyros. ChrisNM and Ian are very familiar with the Las Cruces area so they might be able to help you more.
