Garter food sequence altered - why ? bizarre garter food disorder?

nimdu Jan 21, 2005 11:17 AM

hello all you garter enthusiasts

I got a healthy looking eastern garter a bit more thant 2 years old now , i switched it to the pinky last year , was doing fine on them , grew very quickly from there on. I was wondering tough , it seems to have develloped a strange habit for the past few months. A- it's been eating a lot less this summer , wich i considered normal since it may have reached it's full lenght i suppose , but , now when presented with food , he will about half the time use this scenario , wich may hint a certain food disorder : refuse the food sometimes bite it and stop 5 minutes later , he defecates - he will then accept the food.

Any explanations !? Becoming confusing , cause with the pinky's i waste them when he refuses to eat , but i know that 15 minutes later he's gonna be ready for food. Worst : If i do not provide is food after his defecation ( only triggered by the food presented earlier) , he'll crawl around his enclosure like a madman , scratching , searching , visibly hungry , etc.

Basically , food presentation triggers his urge to purge , only afterwich he will accept food.he does defecate in other times , i only wait until he did flush his last meal toughrouly before offering food again ( around a week-earlier if he seems hungry and agitated) , but half the time he'll use the scenario mentionned above , and the other half of the time , eat voraciously. Basically ,i'm confused , i don't know when to offer it food anymore- he does look like he is thinning a bit , but nothing to be worried i'd say. i'm just ever frustrated when comes feeding time , cause it's a game i now always loose....!

any similar experiences , comments or advices would be appreciated.

How are you wasting a pinky by offering it within a 15-minute time period? Are you feeding live or f/t?

Maybe you can go even longer between feedings than a week. How big is your snake?

well , i won't refreeze a pinky , heard it wasn't good in long term, so , the bizarre behavior i mentionned i learned at my expense... ( nothing tragic... ) the garter is about 70cm long.

i'll try waiting a bit longer , maybe that's the bottom of the story... thanks-was just curious to see if anybody had experienced a similar situation
