flowers for uros

jeune18 Jan 21, 2005 11:22 AM

i wanted to get a small windowsill pot and grow some flowers for my uros or maybe even some greens but i am kind of an idiot when it comes to plants and the like.
does anyone know a brand of soil i can use that won't hurt the uros or is fertilizer not a huge issue?
also any recommendations on things i can grow?

I think the "organic" potting soils are pretty safe since they boast "no chemicals or fertilizers". Check out the ingrediants list before you buy.

oh but that leads to what would i be looking for if i read the ingredients, does it actually say fertilizer or is it listed by chemical name?

This is what is written on the bag of organic potting soil I bought at Home Depot: "A top quality, high organic blend of peat humus, peat moss, sand, vermiculite and perlite. This 100% natural mixture contains no chemical additives or ingredients."
I'm contemplating adding this mix to Isis's nest box.

Hope this helps

I cannot remember if this has already been discussed. As far as a flower box, that would be a good choice of dirt to grow organic goodies for your Uros in. If you REALLY want to go all the way you can even buy organic seeds, but the greens can be very hard to find in this way.

I am a little concerned about the soil Sunfox speaks of in their tank though. Vermiculite is a very jagged substance, and perlite is used to absorb water and slowly let it out, as well as adding to the porosity of the soil. I do not think it would be a positive if a Uro ate either of these compounds.

Has this already been debated?

Pansies and dandelions are the only small ones I can think of. I don't know how they'll do indoors. I know some folks on the uro email list I'm on can't grow dandies indoors even though they're everywhere outside. All the other flowers I can think of are pretty large plants.
